Standard pillows, are those that measure 20 x 26. You will also see them sized 21x 27 inches from those manufacturers desiring to be different. King size pillows tend to be impractical, unless a person’s frame is large and they need the extra support that a king size pillow provides.

Getting just the right size of pillows or the standard ones are more practical. As discussed in the previous paragraph, the only time that you should get large and king size pillows. Most of us have double beds which are not the large to need king-sized pillows. Having the right size of pillow is important because you’ll be using these as you sleep. If the pillow is too big, it will occupy a larger space and you might not be able use the full size of your bed.

Most major airlines provide Standard pillows along with blankets, or even feather duvets in first class. In fact, on long international flights, a first class passenger may feel as though he or she is at a five-star hotel. However, there are some exceptions where airlines provide dinky pillows instead of standard size. Frequent travelers have been known to take along their own silk or sateen pillowcases to assure resting their heads on clean pillows. On the positive side, airline pillows are firm enough to support the back.

Standard pillows may be filled with 50 percent polyester and 50 percent cotton, or 100 percent cotton, with cotton covers. They may be treated for antibacterial qualities or be flame-retardant. Correctional Facilities are required to meet state and/or federal guidelines for the safety of bedding materials.

Effective January 1, 2004, California has issued safety regulations to protect consumers from mattress fires caused by open flames. Enforcement begins January 1, 2005. All mattresses, box springs, and futons manufactured for the sale in the state of California must resist intense fire growth. California has asked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to make these tough standards a nationwide law. A similar standard for comforters and pillows is being developed.

Pillow sets generally indicate more than one set of pillows. What constitutes a set? We might suppose, two or four pillows that match, for as an example. Pillow sets aren’t usually sold with each pillow containing a smaller and larger version of itself, or sold with accessories, such as crystal soap dishes, fine-milled soaps, and delicate lotions.

A set can be whatever the supplier or manufacturer determines it to be. So reading the description carefully to verify exactly what’s you are purchasing. A pillow set may be two king size pillows, while a complete set of pillows may mean four of them that are standard size, or vice versa. Occasionally, pillow sets may mean the pillow protectors and/or pillowcases are included in the price, but this doesn’t seem to be a very common practice. Generally, pillow sets mean the pillows are all made from the same filler.

A bright and colorful decorative theme can be achieved when the pillows in the set are of different shapes and sizes. That’s getting creative, especially if the manufacturer enables the buyer to mix and match the pillowcases or zippered covers. If you want different levels of firmness among pillows, it’s possible to create your own pillow set by ordering one of each or two of each, and so forth.

For the inveterate reader who just can’t put down a book until they’ve got to the middle or the end, a set of firm pillows will provide much better support for the back than softer ones. A pillow set may also include a body pillow. This pillow normally measures 60″ long, enabling a change of position while reading into the wee hours. Generally, though, due to the added cost, a body pillow is a separate purchase.

Queen size pillows, fit somewhere between standard and king size. It is difficult to give exact measurements of the queen size pillow because of the variation of size between manufactures. For example, some manufacturers make queen-size pillows 20″ x 30″ in size, which is four inches longer than a standard size pillow. While other manufacturers sell, queen size pillows that measure 30″ x 15″ but are five inches thick, seeming larger than the normal, possibly flatter.

Such discrepancies may make it difficult to find a queen-size pillowcase that fits properly. You must read the labels carefully. Even then, you may not discover all the information you desire, such as the thickness the pillow scrunches down to when your head is resting on it.

Most manufacturers are very good at providing answers to the expected questions, but don’t hesitate to query them if your question is not one listed in their provided information. It is likely your money you’re going to spend and it is not bad manners to ask customer service for more information. Customer goodwill is very important to most companies, although they do appreciate politeness in return. Let them know if an employee has been rude without reason, of course. After all, it is to their benefit to serve you. Good customer service most often generates a returning customer.

King size pillows measure 20″ x 36″ and were designed to complement king size beds. It’s also true that three standard size pillows at 20″ x 26″ each, do just as good a job of decorating. The smaller pillows are also more versatile, which is why so many luxury hotels use instead.

Almost all luxury pillows, regardless of material, can be ordered king sized. You can select down, double down, down and feathers, or latex inside wool, for example. Orthopedic surgeons and other professionals would probably see fewer patients with head and neck problems if we all took better care when selecting pillows, even if king size pillows aren’t our personal choice.

Scientists have taken to placing mattress-sized pillows at specific snow survey sites in California. Landing on the pillows, snow displaces a sort of anti-freeze inside each pillow as it accumulates on top. A data signal is triggered and received by California Department of Water Resources that helps track changes in critical snowpack. Even so, the snow surveyor can still count on sleeping on his own king size pillow after a hard day’s work of measuring snowpack the old-fashioned way.
